MFNPS Investigates Serious Assault

On September 29th, 2024, Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) were on patrol in Opaskwayak Cree Nation and were alerted by a group of people in a local parking lot that there was an assault.


Police attended to the area where they located a severely injured adult male who was unconscious and unresponsive. Police administered First Aid until EMS arrived, the male was transported to The Pas hospital for treatment, but due to his injuries he was later flown to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he remains in critical but stable condition.


Officers were able to review security footage in the area and determined that two suspects were involved with the assault.


Police located one of the suspects and was arrested. The suspect, a 17-year-old youth male, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was remanded into custody and has been charged with:

·       Aggravated assault

·       Assault with a weapon x2

·       Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose


On September 30th, the subsequent investigation led officers to identify the second suspect.

On October 1st, Members of the Manitoba First Nations Police, along with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team, RCMP K9 services, and RCMP RPAS, executed the search warrant and arrested the suspect at the residence.


A 16-year-old youth, from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was arrested and remanded into custody facing charges of:

·       Attempted murder

·       Assault

·       Uttering threats against a person

·       Weapon possession contrary to an order

·       Carrying concealed weapon

·       Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon

·       Disguise with intent to commit offence

·       Fail to comply with conditions of release order x4


It is believed that the victim was not known to the suspects prior to the assault. The investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone that may have information to contact police in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.
