The Manitoba First Nations Police Service is proud of of our K9 unit and the officers that go above and beyond to serve our communities.
Dogs are not just our best friends; they are also highly trained members of the MFNPS. The Manitoba First Nations Police Service began its K-9 Unit in 2009. Since then, 6 service doges have come through the program. There are currently 2 general purpose patrol dogs (Ceto and Zion) on active duty for the MFNPS. MFNPS also has a special search and rescue dog (Rookie). Members of the K-9 Unit are required to meet the provincial standard in the Province of Manitoba yearly. Each dog works exclusively with their human partner who is a sworn member of the MFNPS.
Our K-9 Units support members on general patrol, while also responding to calls for service at their respective detachments. Our K-9 teams protect and support all of the MFNPS communities on a 24/7 basis. They are important members who share in our mission to serve and protect First Nation communities.
We primarily use the Malinois breed. The Malinois’ high drive, agility, and eagerness to please their handler are characteristics that make it an expectational choice.
Our dogs are also family members. Each handler brings home their K-9 partner. At the end of their careers, and into retirement, the handler can choose to have their partner stay with their family.
