Remote Piloted Aircraft System
Manitoba First Nations Police Service
A Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) is commonly known as a drone. Drones have become commonplace, especially for consumers. While they have become very accessible for aerial photography, they have become an invaluable tool for police in supporting public safety.
The Manitoba First Nations Police Service has leveraged this technology to aid in supporting daily operations including:
- Searches for missing persons (covering vast areas with challenging terrain)
- Public and officer safety during high-risk arrests
- Outdoor crime scene examinations
These RPAS’s are operated by MFNPS officers who have completed extensive training and has passed a Transport Canada exam and a flight review from an accredited trainer. Each MFNPS pilot holds an Advanced Certificate and must conform to the regulations set out by Transport Canada. This mandatory process ensures safe flight operations.
The MFNPS currently operates the following DJI RPAS platforms:
- DJI Matrice 300RTK with a Zenmuse H20T camera
- DJI M30T (4 aircraft)
- DJI Enterprise Advanced
These aircraft have the capability of delivering extremely high-resolution images including infrared technology which provides incredibly detailed views which have proven to be very useful in searches for missing persons. As funding becomes available, the MFNPS will eventually have at least one RPAS in each detachment. This will include an expansion of qualified officers with Advanced Certification. Of note, our RPAS officers also perform regular policing duties in their respective detachments.
